This short is one of the winners in the Directors UK Alexa Challenge 2017, submitted on the theme of “anniversary”. Filmed on a vertiginous wooded hillside in Hampshire, it’s about World War 1 poet Edward Thomas. No sync sound was recorded as there’s no dialogue, but it needed the soundscape of World War 1 trenches at the beginning and English countryside in spring time at the end. It also required a range of Foley work with many different footstep styles, as well as the sounds of a 1917 uniform being discarded. The final mix had to balance a music track by Henry Bird and one of Edward Thomas’ poems read as a voice over by actor Alex Bartram.
